    Generation 5

    Generation No. 5

    7.  JOHANNA FRIEDERIKA5 HOTTMANN (DANIEL4, RULAND DANIEL3, JOHANN (HANS) JACOB2, JOHANNES (HANS)1) was born November 07, 1796 in Village of Grunbach, Neckarkreis (county), Oberamtsbezirk (adminstrative district) of Schorndort in the provice of Wuerttenburg, Germany, and died December 01, 1869 in Germany.  She married DANIEL HOTTMANN September 21, 1820, son of JOHANN HOTTMANN and HELENA ZEYHER.  He was born September 04, 1790 in Village of Grunbach, Neckarkreis (county), Oberamtsbezirk (adminstrative district) of Schorndort in the province of Wuerttenburg, Germany, and died July 10, 1848 in Germany.

    Notes for JOHANNA FRIEDERIKA HOTTMANN:

Darcy Boock says her information states that Johanna's maiden name was Hottmann.  Note from Darcy: Pg. 326

    Notes for DANIEL HOTTMANN:

Since his children were born in Wuerttenburgh, Germany, it is assumed that Daniel was too.

In an email from Darcy Boock dated Nov. 27, 2000:

...I started researching the Hottmann name 22 years ago. I descend from Christian's brother, John (Johann) Gottlieb Hottmann who was my great-great-great grandfather and who also settled in Arena, Iowa Co., WI.  By using the microfilmed records (LDS)..., I have been able to trace the Hottmann family back to the 1600s in Germany. For several generations, they were wine growers in the Neckar River Valley in the small village of Grunbach in Wuerttenburgh just a little east of Stuttgart.

John and Christian had eight siblings, but three died in infancy and one at age 11. I know at least one other sister came to America.  Their father, Daniel, came from a family of 13 children and their mother, Johanna, from a family of 10. I have names and birth dates of all of these children. Their mother's maiden name was also Hottmann.

I have copies of the Civil War Pension records for both John and Christian and copies of their wills. Christian enlisted in the Civil War Feb., 1865 in Company C, 49th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. he married Eva Catherine Deis and had six children: Charles Edward (married. Lavina Ray), George (married. Nellie Ray), Christian C. (married. Margaret "Maggie" Quirk), William Daniel (married. Esther May Bills), Theodore (married. Mary Schlew/Schlough), and Katie (married. August Schoenmann).

John Gottlieb Hottmann had two children by his first wife Barbara Stierli:  Elizabeth (married. Jacob Accola and had seven children-one died in infancy); the second child of Christian Friedrich was my great-great grandfather who married Frances Anna Nattermann and had seven children (two died young). Barbara died in 1857 and is buried in the Arena Cem.

John and his 2nd wife, Anna Nattermann, had seven children: Johan Gottlieb was a bachelor, Anna Maria (married. Herman Wilson and had one daughter), Clara died young, Wilhelm Michael (married. Edyth Porter and had no children), Henry (married. 1. Jennie Johnson and had two children and 2. Bertina Martinson Oberle Cummings (no children), Joseph (married. Loveday Jane Ralph and had 5 children, Conrad Fredrich was a bachelor, Conrad Rudolph (married. Thea Steen and had no children), Frank Christian (married. Augusta Prien and had one daughter), and Nellie May (married. Joseph Schlough and had 3 children).

As far as I can tell, all the Hottmanns living today in the Arena, Mazomanie, and Spring Green areas and the Accolas living in Sauk County are all descendants of these two early immigrant brothers.

...I live in River Falls, Wisconsin at N8177 975th St.  54022-4413 and would be happy to get together with you some to share information....I will be in Windsor, WI sometime over the Christmas vacation to visit my older brother, Dallas Kleeman and his family....  I am an elementary art teacher and need to be back to school again by Jan. 2nd....

    More from Darcey:

The Hottmanns for many generations were wine growers in the Neckar River Valley of Southern Germany in Wuerttenburgh. They belonged to the Grunbach parish (church) equally as long and before that time may have come from the town of Waiblingen just to the west.

The church records gathered together ...(for this information) were extracted from microfilms #1184713, 1184714, and 1184715 filmed by the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), Salt Lake City, Utah.  These microfilms cover the parish registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials of the Evangelical (Lutheran) Church of Grunbach, and include family registers.  Much information for this family history was gleaned from the Civil War Pension Records of John G. and Christian C. Hottmann, brothers.  Other information was found in the Iowa and Sauk County Courthouses, the Arena Cemetery located on the north side of Hwy. 14 just east of Arena, Wisconsin, the Mazomanie and St. Barnabas Cemeteries located on the west edge of Mazomanie on the south and north sides of Hwy. 14 respectively, the Prairie du Sac Cemetery located in Prairie du Sac, the Sauk City and St. Aloysius Cemeteries located adjacent to each other on the south side of County Road PF just west of Prairie du Sac. Information was also supplied by descendants of John and Christian HOTTMANN. (Darcey's brother, Darwin Kleeman, hired a German researcher while at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah to reach the German church records from Grunbach, which took our HOTTMANN family back five more generations to the 1600's.

Grunbach is a small village located north and east of Stuttgart and east of Waiblingen.  Hottmann was the maiden name of Daniel's wife, Joahanna.  Daniel and Joahanna were related:  Daniel's grandfather, Johann Jacob Hottmann was married twice with Johanna descending from his first marriage and Daniel descending from his 2nd marriage.  Johann Jacob was Daniel's grandfather and Joahanna's great-grandfather.  Daniel, born 9/4/1790 and Johanna, born 11/7/1796 were only 6 years apart in age even though they were from two different generations.  Daniel was the tenth of thirteen children born to Johann Anton Hottmann and Helena Zeyher, whereas Joanna Friederika was the eldest of ten children borth to Daniel Hottmann and Helena Catharina Schmidt.

Children are listed above under (6) Daniel Hottmann.

    8.  JOHN GOTTLIEB5 HOTTMANN (DANIEL4, JOHANN ANTON3, JOHANN (HANS) JACOB2, JOHANNES (HANS)1) was born June 28, 1823 in Village of Grunbach, Neckarkreis (county), Oberamtsbezirk (adminstrative district) of Schorndort in the provice of Wuerttenburg, Germany, and died December 11, 1894 in Arena  Iowa County, WI.  He married (1) BARBARA STIERLI August 05, 1856 in Sauk City, Sauk Co., Wisconsin, daughter of UNKOWN UNKNOWN and SUSANNA STIERLI.  She was born 1834 in Switzerland, and died December 1857.  He married (2) MARY KUMINGUNDA KRUEL December 29, 1860 in Michael Leikauf residence in Cassell Prairie, Troy Township, Sauk Co., WI..  She was born Abt. 1834 in Germany, and died February 17, 1899 in Arena  Iowa County, WI.

    Notes for JOHN GOTTLIEB HOTTMANN:

Johann was the second of ten children born to Daniel and Johanna.  Johann emigrated to Switzerland some time before 1854 and from there immigrated to America.  His daughter, Elisabeth (Elisa or "Aunt Lizzie") was born July 30, 1854 in Switzerland.  She later married Jacob Accola. his son Christian Frederich was born March 24, 1856 in Arena, Iowa Co., Wisconsin. he later married Frances Anna Nattermann.  As was often common in German farm families, a marriage took place AFTER the female showed she could conceive children and thus, produce a large family.  After having one or two children, in many cases, the marriage would soon follow, as was the case with Johann.  On Aug 5, 1856, he married Barbara Stierli, the daughter of an "unknown" father and Susanna Stierli. Barbara was born in Switzerland and presumably accompanied him to America with their daughter, Elizabeth. The marriage took place in a Protestant ceremony in Sauk City, Sauk Co., WI in the presence of his brother, Christian and close friend, Frederick Thudium.  Barbara Hottmann died in Dec. 1857, cause of death unknown, and is buried in the Arena Cemetery.

Johann married again Dec. 29, 1860 after Mary Kumigunda Kall (or Knell or Kruel) gave birth to a son, Johann Gottlieb, born Dec. 2, 1860.  Their marriage took place across the Wisconsin River at the Michael Leikauf residence in Cassell Prairie, Troy Township, Sauk Co., WI.  Together, they had nine children.

After the onset of the Civil War, John G. Hottmann at 38 yrs. of age, enlisted as a private in Captain Stahel's Company "K", 2nd Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry for a term of three yrs.  He enlisted on the 24th day of Oct, 1861 and was mustered into service on Dec. 20, 1861. He left behind his wife, Mary to care for three small children, Elizabeth 7, Christian 5, John 1.

On his Certificate of Disability for Discharge, John is listed as 5 ft. 6 3/4 inches tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, and light complexion. While unloading government supplies on the 15th day of May, 1862 near Washington, DC on the Virginia side of the Potomac River, a box fell upon him and cause him to receive a hernia (oblique inguinal hernia) on his right side, which he suffered from for the rest of his life. He was treated for his injury at Carver Hosp. in DC until his discharge on Aug 15, 1862. He also was afflicted with Asthma in 1862 when he was stationed near Fredricksburg. His total length of service was ten months and twenty days. His brother Christian and his friend Frederick Thudium also service for the Union as privates in the WI. Infantry. Christian enlisted Feb 18, 1865 in Co. "C", 49th Regiment and Frederick enlisted Feb. 20, 1865 in Co. "B", 9th Regiment.

Prior to his enlistment in the Civil War, John was a blacksmith in sound, physical condition in Arena. In the "History of Iowa County C. 1880, page 785", "A German by the name of John Hattman was the first blacksmith to begin business here (Village of Arena); his shop stood a little off from the village plat." After his military service, he tried to continue his trade of blacksmithing. However, after five years, he was unable to work at this profession because of the injury he incurred during the war.  The strain was too much for him. He tried to make a living by farming, which he attempted for twelve years, but found he could not work for more than one half day and much of the time not more than one fourth day at doing chores or other light work.

Up until Oct 26, 1892, when he was 69 years old, he had been receiving a pension of $10 per month for his disability. At that time, he applied for an increase in his disability pension claim, where he stated, "I have had asthma since 1862...and is now growing much worse. Have had increasing deafness in both ears for the past 15 years. For the past 8 yrs., have had trouble with bladder which is worse when I take a little cold, have been obliged to call upon a physician to have water (urine) drawn off on several occasions. My kidneys bother me when I lie on my back." After examination, he was entitle to a 10/18 rating for the disability caused by the right inguinal hernia, 6/18 for that caused by disease to the lungs (asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis) and 4/18 for that caused by disease of the heart. He received no pension for his deafness or disease to his bladder or kidneys.

In a Physician's Affidavit filed on Feb 23, 1895 with the Adjutant General's office of Wisconsin-Pension Division, H. R.  Bird, MD. stated the following: "The said John Hottman had a combination of unpleasant troubles: Namely Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis resulting in Emphysema and a very large right Inguinal Hernia. These troubles, so complicated each other at times that he would be confined to his house, and bed, for several weeks at a time, and I found him exceedingly difficult to treat. In May, 1887, he had a specially severe time of it. Owing to his Asthma, and Emphysema condition, the circulatory system was so obstructed, that the liver was considerably enlarged and the kidneys were secreting urine very strong, and heavily charged with solid constituents, and these passing into the bladder brought about acute cystitis, and from the pressure upon the Urethra by an enlarged prostate and the very greatly distended condition of the scrotum from Hernia, he could not void his urine. This was in May, 1887. I was called and after much trouble and pain to the patient, I succeeded in passing an instrument and drew off a large quantity of blood and mucous, for 3 weeks at this time the instrument was used daily, but the Cystitis became chronic, and during the succeeding years since 1887, he has been able to pass only a few days at a time without the use of the Catheter. Since Aug, 1894, he has been confined to his house, unable to get about or be much on his feet on account of the severe pain referred to the bladder, and desire to urinate and inability to do so without the use of the Catheter, and became ever weaker mentally as well as physically until about the middle of Oct, 1894 he took to his bed, gradually succumbing to his troubles. Dying Dec. 11, 1894, aged 71 yrs."  The Obituary of John Hottmann was found in the Friday, Dec. 14, 1894 issue of "The eye and Star", Dodgeville Wi:

John Hottmann, an old resident of this vicinity, died at this home on Tuesday morning.

He was a member of the G.A.R. of this place and a respected man and will be greatly

missed by the citizens of Arena.  The family have our sympathy in their sad hour of

         bereavement.

John was buried in the Arena Cem. His second wife, Mary Kumigunda and his bachelor sons John and Fred are buried along side of him behind a large HOTTMANN monument.

The 1870 Agricultural Schedule for Arena lists the following land, livestock, and produce owned by John during the year ending June 1, 1870:

      Acres of land:

         60 acres of improved land

20 acres of other unimproved land

Present cash value of farm:  $1000

Present cash value of farming implements and machinery: $200

      Livestock:

3 Horses, 5 Milk cows, 4 other cattle, 6 swine

      Value of livestock:  $300

      Produce:

15 bushes of Spring Wheat, 200 bushels of Indian Corn, 100 bushels of Oats, 12 bushels of

buckwheat, 75 bushels of Irish Potatoes, Dairy products-300 pounds of butter, 4 tons of Hay.

Value of animals slaughtered or sold for  slaughter: $125

Estimated value of all farm production, including betterments and additions to stock:  $425

The land that John Hottmann owned didn't sound very productive, as was seen in an affidavit Mary Hottmann filed with the Adjutant General's Office of Wisconsin-Pension Division on June 11, 1896, in which is stated, "The estate left by her deceased husband consists of land lying on the banks of the Wisconsin river and with the exception of one sand eighty acres, overflows in times of high water in the river. That her income principally consists in the crops raised off of this sand eighty and the hay raised on 20 acres of the marsh which very often is a total loss on account of high water. That the said lands are not worth above $1100 or $1200, and that the income derived from said farm this past year was not above eighty (80) dollars. That her personal property consists of 3 Horses-7 cattle-3 swine-2 wagons not worth over $150. That the average income past three years has been about the same as last year. The crops raised last year consisted of 150 bushels Rye worth 30 cents a bushel-192 bushels of Oats worth 15 cents a bushel-400 bushels. corn worth an average of 25 cents a bushel. This grain was fed to the stock on the premises. That she had no other income or means of support. That she has three children under age to support, and that she has no one legally bound to support her."  It sounds as though Mary Hottmann had a hard time making ends meet and supporting her three children who were still at home, Rude, aged 18, Frank aged 16, and Nelie aged 13.

When Mary Hottmann died Feb 18, 1899, Nellie was 17 years old and was placed in the care of William and Anna Stebnitz. However, in the 1900 census when Nellie was 18, she was living with her brothers John, Henry, Joseph, Frederick, Rudolph and Frank with Joseph listed as the head of the household.

The obit. of Mary Hottmann as found in the Friday, Feb. 17, 1899 issue of the Dodgeville Chronicle, Dodgeville, Wisconsin reads as follows:

"Died, at her home near this village (Arena), February 17, 1899, of apoplexy (stroke), Mrs. Mary Hottman, aged 64 years.  Deceased was the widow of John G. Hottman, who died about four years ago. She enjoyed the best of health until December 27th, last, when she was stricken with apoplexy from which she never recovered. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church on Tuesday and the remains interred in the Arena Cemetery. The bereaved children have the sympathy of all in the loss of their dear mother."

On the Declaration for Original Invalid Pension date 11/19/1889, it states that Christian enlisted 2/13/1865 and was a private in Co. C of the 49th regiment of Wis. Infantry Vo., commanded by Richard A. Warehause and was honorably discharged at St. Lois MO on the 1st day of Nov, 1965.  It states that while a member of the organization, in the service and in the line of his duty between Chicago and Bloomington, IL on about the 9th day of March, 1965, he contracted a severe cold from exposure while being transported from Chicago to Bloomington with other soldiers in the car ordinarily used for the transportation of merchandise. The car contained more individuals than it could accommodate and as a consequence, this delcarant was compelled to....a position near the open door of the car...during the entire route and the condition of the weather being very severe and inclement, delcarant ....the cold as aforesaid which has resulted in great deafness of both ears and a diseased condition of the head causing dizziness and ...headache which disabilities have been ...to afflict delcarant each and every year to date of the enlistment ....as aforesaid to the ..... .

The examination papers state, "We hereby certify that in compliance with the requirements of the law we have carefully examined the applicant, who states that he is suffering from the following disability, incurred in the service, viz: "deafness in both ears and affliction of the head" and that he receives a pension of ...dollars per month.  He makes the following statement upon which he bases his claim: While ... in cattle car from Chicago to Bloomington, IL, ...... affliction of head result of severe freezing, ...of dizziness ..in the head and often falls down with pain and loses consciousness. Deafness and other head difficulties growing worse severe."  Upon examination, we find the following objective conditions: Pulse rate, 98, respirations, 30, temperature 98 1/2, height 5'7", weight 140 pounds, age 59 years.  Deafness in both ears...... Chronic ...laryngitis.... He is, in our opinion, entitled to a 22/30 rating for the disability caused by severed deafness, both ears.

The Surgeon's Certificate reads:  Increase Pension Claim No 519499 Christian Hottman Co. C, Reg. Wis. Inf. Dodgeville Wi.  He receives $20 dollars per month. He makes the following statement in regard to the origin of his disabilities and date when first discovered by him: That on March 8th, 1865, going from Madison to St. Louis in cattle car from exposure caught a severe cold which settled in his ears causing him to be partially deaf and that the deafness has increased until he can scarcely hear anything.

Nose, right nostril has an hypertrophied middle turbinated body and a small ennonondroma of septum. Left side has a medium sized spur on middle portion of septum, both the spur and hypertrophy cause some nasal obstruction.  Throat, has a slightly atrophied condition of the glandular structure of pharynx and post nasal space otherwise in good condition.

Ear, right after removing a large plug of cerumen, I found the drum membrane pearly white, retracted and thickened. Eustachian tube pervious to air. The external ear, the canal, is somewhat larger than normal, due perhaps to a slight atrophy of secreting membrane or surface. The degree of deafness is severe. Can hear ordinary loud conversation at one foot, but cannot at three feet.

Ear, left, after removing a small quantity of hardened wax, I find the drum thickened, pearly white and slightly retracted. Canal about normal size. Eustachian tube pervious to air. Degree of deafness severe. Can hear ordinary loud conversation at one foot, but cannot at three feet.

I believe the cause of the claimants deafness is due to chronic catarrh of middle ear and cannot state positively whether it was caused at the time or in the manner which the claimant states.  I believe, however, that the condition of the nasal passages have had a great deal to do with the condition or rather catarrhal condition of the middle ear. I do not find from examination that any viscous habits of his are accountable for his disability. Age may have little to do with his deafness.
