    Notes for DANIEL HOTTMANN:

Since his children were born in Wuerttenburgh, Germany, it is assumed that Daniel was too.

In an email from Darcy Boock dated Nov. 27, 2000:

...I started researching the Hottmann name 22 years ago. I descend from Christian's brother, John (Johann) Gottlieb Hottmann who was my great-great-great grandfather and who also settled in Arena, Iowa Co., WI.  By using the microfilmed records (LDS)..., I have been able to trace the Hottmann family back to the 1600s in Germany. For several generations, they were wine growers in the Neckar River Valley in the small village of Grunbach in Wuerttenburgh just a little east of Stuttgart.

John and Christian had eight siblings, but three died in infancy and one at age 11. I know at least one other sister came to America.  Their father, Daniel, came from a family of 13 children and their mother, Johanna, from a family of 10. I have names and birth dates of all of these children. Their mother's maiden name was also Hottmann.

I have copies of the Civil War Pension records for both John and Christian and copies of their wills. Christian enlisted in the Civil War Feb., 1865 in Company C, 49th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. he married Eva Catherine Deis and had six children: Charles Edward (married. Lavina Ray), George (married. Nellie Ray), Christian C. (married. Margaret "Maggie" Quirk), William Daniel (married. Esther May Bills), Theodore (married. Mary Schlew/Schlough), and Katie (married. August Schoenmann).

John Gottlieb Hottmann had two children by his first wife Barbara Stierli:  Elizabeth (married. Jacob Accola and had seven children-one died in infancy); the second child of Christian Friedrich was my great-great grandfather who married Frances Anna Nattermann and had seven children (two died young). Barbara died in 1857 and is buried in the Arena Cem.

John and his 2nd wife, Anna Nattermann, had seven children: Johan Gottlieb was a bachelor, Anna Maria (married. Herman Wilson and had one daughter), Clara died young, Wilhelm Michael (married. Edyth Porter and had no children), Henry (married. 1. Jennie Johnson and had two children and 2. Bertina Martinson Oberle Cummings (no children), Joseph (married. Loveday Jane Ralph and had 5 children, Conrad Fredrich was a bachelor, Conrad Rudolph (married. Thea Steen and had no children), Frank Christian (married. Augusta Prien and had one daughter), and Nellie May (married. Joseph Schlough and had 3 children).

As far as I can tell, all the Hottmanns living today in the Arena, Mazomanie, and Spring Green areas and the Accolas living in Sauk County are all descendants of these two early immigrant brothers.

...I live in River Falls, Wisconsin at N8177 975th St.  54022-4413 and would be happy to get together with you some to share information....I will be in Windsor, WI sometime over the Christmas vacation to visit my older brother, Dallas Kleeman and his family....  I am an elementary art teacher and need to be back to school again by Jan. 2nd....

    More from Darcey:

The Hottmanns for many generations were wine growers in the Neckar River Valley of Southern Germany in Wuerttenburgh. They belonged to the Grunbach parish (church) equally as long and before that time may have come from the town of Waiblingen just to the west.

The church records gathered together ...(for this information) were extracted from microfilms #1184713, 1184714, and 1184715 filmed by the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), Salt Lake City, Utah.  These microfilms cover the parish registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials of the Evangelical (Lutheran) Church of Grunbach, and include family registers.  Much information for this family history was gleaned from the Civil War Pension Records of John G. and Christian C. Hottmann, brothers.  Other information was found in the Iowa and Sauk County Courthouses, the Arena Cemetery located on the north side of Hwy. 14 just east of Arena, Wisconsin, the Mazomanie and St. Barnabas Cemeteries located on the west edge of Mazomanie on the south and north sides of Hwy. 14 respectively, the Prairie du Sac Cemetery located in Prairie du Sac, the Sauk City and St. Aloysius Cemeteries located adjacent to each other on the south side of County Road PF just west of Prairie du Sac. Information was also supplied by descendants of John and Christian HOTTMANN. (Darcey's brother, Darwin Kleeman, hired a German researcher while at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah to reach the German church records from Grunbach, which took our HOTTMANN family back five more generations to the 1600's.

Grunbach is a small village located north and east of Stuttgart and east of Waiblingen.  Hottmann was the maiden name of Daniel's wife, Joahanna.  Daniel and Joahanna were related:  Daniel's grandfather, Johann Jacob Hottmann was married twice with Johanna descending from his first marriage and Daniel descending from his 2nd marriage.  Johann Jacob was Daniel's grandfather and Joahanna's great-grandfather.  Daniel, born 9/4/1790 and Johanna, born 11/7/1796 were only 6 years apart in age even though they were from two different generations.  Daniel was the tenth of thirteen children born to Johann Anton Hottmann and Helena Zeyher, whereas Joanna Friederika was the eldest of ten children borth to Daniel Hottmann and Helena Catharina Schmidt.
