     5. Jacob Friederich5 Hottmann (Johann Antonius4, Johann (Hanß) Jacob3, Johannes (Hans)2, Jacob1)52 was born 29 Sep 1778 in Grunbach, Württemberg, Germany52, and died Unknown in probably Russia. He married (1) Elisabetha Baun53 29 May 1804 in Rohrbronn, Württemberg, Germany53,54, daughter of Jacob Baun and Magdalena Schurr. She was born 01 Dec 1779 in Rohrbronn, Württemberg, Germany55, and died 23 Jun 1825 in Rohrbronn, Württemberg, Germany56,57. She was born 19 Jan 1781 in Schorndorf, Württemberg, Germany58, and died Unknown in probably Schorndorf, Württemberg, Germany.

Jacob Friederich Hottmann and family appear in the Family Register of the Winterbach Evangelical church in the volume dealing with affiliated churches (Rohrbronn, here), p. 123. In that record is a note: "Ist mit seiner ganzen Familie nach Süd. Rußland ausgewandert im April 1831." [Emigrated with his entire family to southern Russia in April 1831.] That statement is not entirely accurate. By 1831, he was married to his second wife, Eva Rosina Lenz of Schorndorf. Of her, this same register says: "Ist nach der Auswanderung ihres Ehegatten wieder nach Schorndorf gezogen." [After the emigration of her husband, she moved back to Schorndorf.] His youngest child, Elisabeth Rosina, had died in infancy in 1825, shortly after her mother's death. His descendants did not lose touch with their roots in Rohrbronn, as reflected in the notes concerning son Johannes and his son Valentin Kurt Hottmann.

     7. Elisabetha Magdalena5 Hottmann (Johann Antonius4, Johann (Hanß) Jacob3, Johannes (Hans)2, Jacob1)73,74 was born 04 Aug 1783 in Grunbach, Württemberg, Germany75,76, and died Unknown. She married Johann Gottlieb Lemberger77,78 24 Sep 1805 in Grunbach, Württemberg, Germany79, son of Johannes Lemberger and Barbara Knaur. He was born 20 Jun 1779 in Grunbach, Württemberg, Germany80,81, and died 1851 in Darke County, Ohio.

    Notes for Elisabetha Magdalena Hottmann:
Birth/baptism: Evangelical Church records, Grunbach (Taufregister 1728-1807):
Date: born and baptized 4 Aug 1783
Parents: Johann Antoni Hottmann, des Rathes, and Helena Zeiher
    Infant: Elisabetha Magdalena
Witnesses: Johann Georg Ilg, Sr., Bürger & Weingärtner; and his wife, Margaretha Seibold.

A letter from her husband, Johann Gottlieb Lemberger, to their son (Tobias) William (Wilhelm) Lemberger, 25 Oct 1843, asks William to convey greetings to Christina Hottmann.

Letter from Ellamarie Coles to H.H. West, 22 Sep 1933, referring to Elisabeth: "His mother died in 1855 of paralysis in Washington County, Iowa. The mother lived with a brother Daniel Hottman after coming to America." This is evidently incorrect. Her brother, Daniel Hottmann, never left Württemberg, and no evidence has been found to substantiate that she was ever in Washington County, Iowa. It seems more likely that after her husband's death that she would have gone to live with one of her more nearby sons. Supposedly after the senior Johann Gottlieb's death, the son William (Tobias Wilhelm) left Philadelphia and returned to Darke Co. to take up operation of the farm, which was supposedly in his name, rather than that of the parents. It would have been natural for her to be taken care of by William, and possibly she went with him and his family when they moved west to Cambridge City, Indiana.

The Auswanderungsakten (emigration files) of the Oberamt Schorndorf contain substantial documentation pertaining to the emigration of Johann Gottlieb Lemberger and his family. He made application through the authorities of his home village, Grunbach, to the Oberamt in April 1832 for the emigration to include himself, his wife, his remaining children (Elisabetha Catharina, age 20; Carl Michael, age 13 1/2; Johannes, age 11; Johann Jacob, age 8 1/2; and Christian Heinrich, age 6), as well as his "maid," Anna Maria Hottmann (probably a niece of his wife's), age 23 from Grunbach, and Johann Friedrich Austle, age 27 of Schorndorf, described as his hired hand. His declared assets amounted to 1450 guilders. The citizen to be responsible for his affairs after his departure was named as Daniel Hottmann of Grunbach, a brother of his wife's. (Daniel later emigrated as well.) Copies of all of the documentation along with translations are on file.
22 Nov 95 search of Ed. P. William Filby with Mary K. Meyer, _Passenger and Immigration Lists Index (PILI), First Edition, Vol. 2 H-N, and annual supplements 1982-1985. PILI shows Lemberger immigrations as early as 1776, when an Andreas Lemberger arrived in Canada (First Ed., Vol 2, p. 1203; source Smith, C.N., _Brunswick Deserter - Immigrants of the American Revolution). Other Lembergers, apparently not related to ours, appear in other locations in the First Ed., and in annual supplements for 1982, 1985, 1987, 1989, and 1990. The only ones of direct interest are found in the 1987 supplement, which cite the original sources as: Baltimore Port, Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore, 1820-1834; from Customs Passenger Lists, Ed. Michael H. Tepper, Transcribed by Elizabeth P. Bentley, Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982. All these are found on p. 383 of Tepper & Bentley. These Lembergers arrived 30 September 1832 on the ship Clothier from Germany, with intent to inhabit the USA:
    Lemberger, C.H., age 6, male [Christian Heinrich, b. 1826]
Lemberger, Carl M., age 13, male [Karl Michael, b. 1818]
Lemberger, E.A., age 49, female [Should be E.M., but age is correct for Elisabetha Magdalena Hottmann]
Lemberger, Elizabeth, age 19, female [Elisabetha Catharina, b. 1813]
Lemberger, G., age 53, farmer, male [Johann Gottlieb, b. 1779]
    J. Jac., age 9, male [Johann Jacob, b. 1823]
    Johannes, age 11, male [Johannes, b. 1821]
We know from family correspondence that the two eldest children, Johann Gottlieb Jr. and Tobias Wilhelm emigrated earlier, ca. 1830 and 1828. This accounts for all surviving family members.]
This information is, however, at variance with the account in a letter from Ellamarie Coles to H.H. West 22 Sep 1933, referring to John (Johannes) Lemberger: "He came to the United States in 1832. Landed in Baltimore and went from there to Philadelphia. He sailed in the "August," a three masted West India trading vessel from Amsterdam. He came from Wutemberg to Highbrunn on a flat boat, taking the route to Necker down the Rhine to Manheim and the Holland Canal to Amsterdam. He sailed on May 5th and landed Aug. 7, 1832, taking 72 days."

A search of NARA microfilm publication M327, roll 87 (Index [Soundex] to Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Baltimore MD [Federal Passenger Lists] 1820-1897) failed to reveal their immigration. Quite a few Lembergers were listed, but they were all from Bavaria.

Letter from Johannes to H.H. West, 13 May 1900: "Father and balance of family landed in Baltimore on the 7th day of August, 1832. William came to this country in 1828 or 9. Your grandfather Gottlieb followed about 1830." Note discrepancy between 7 Aug and the 30 Sep date derived from PILI.

Letter from Ellamarie Coles to H.H. West, 22 Sep 1933: "After coming to America he laid out the town of Hermann, Missouri, county seat of Gasconade County. He died in 1851, near Caskine, Dark Co., Ohio. His mother (note: she is referring to mother of J. Gottlieb, not of this J.G.) died in 1855 of paralysis, in Washington County, Iowa. The mother lived with a brother Daniel Hottman after coming to America." This last is unclear and evidently incorrect, as her brother Daniel never left Grunbach.

J.G. Lemberger letter to William Lemberger, 19 Jun 1838, written from "Hermann, Missouri." Talks about pros and cons of buying a lot and building a house in Hermann before finishing the survey and returning home (to Darke Co?). "Lately a few families came from New Orleans, among whom was one Carpenter (?) whose wife came from Grunbach. I did not know her at first but later I talked to her and she said she was the daughter of Veigel." (translated from German)

According to Deed Book O-1, pp. 174-175, County Recorder's Office, Darke Co, OH, John G. Lemberger and wife Elizabeth Lemberger sold their farm to William Lemberger for $1000 on 20 February 1845. The farm was described as the west half of the southeast quarter of section 25 of township 10 of range 2 east, consisting of 80 acres. Copy of record furnished by Frank Myers, July 2003.

Publications of the Bureau of the Census, Population Schedule, Census of the US 1850; OH, Darke Co, Butler Twp, p. 436, 4 Dec 1850 (NARA mic pub M432 roll 674)
John Lemberger, age 72, male, farmer, b. Germany
Magdalena Lemberger, age 68, b. Germany
(next dwelling is family of Jacob Miller and his wife, Catharine Lemberger)
This entry confirms that John farmed in Butler Twp.

Lemberger, Jacob, head, white, male. Born Aug 1823, age 76, single. Born in Germany. Father and mother born in Germany. Occupation shoemaker. Can read/write/speak English. Rents a house.

The 1900 census records confirms the statement of Johannes (John) Lemberger that Jacob worked as a shoemaker. The census also establishes that he never married: the entry "single" excludes the other options of married, widowed or divorced.

According to Anita Short and Mrs. Dale Bowers, Cemetery Inscriptions of Darke County, Ohio, Vol. III, p. 93, listing for Oak Grove or Fort Jefferson cemetery includes: "Lemberger, Jacob, 1823-1902." According to the description of the location, this cemetery is in the southwest quarter of Sec. 27, Neave Township, 1/4 mile south of the village of Fort Jefferson, and a slight distance east of Route 121. It is fenced in, attractively cared for. Inscriptions taken in 1964.
